BYD Partners with AWS for Global Expansion in Electric Vehicles

A leading automotive manufacturer uses AWS to pioneer innovative connected mobility services, improve efficiency, and reduce vehicle development costs.

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), revealed today that BYD, the leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEV), has chosen AWS as its primary cloud provider for its connected vehicle platform, aiming to boost global business operations.

As the leading NEV automaker, BYD has sold over 5 million vehicles in 70 countries and regions. AWS offers a scalable and secure foundation for BYD’s core operations, utilizing services such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to store vehicle system data securely.

Employing Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) and Amazon CloudFront, BYD has established a connected vehicle architecture capable of deploying new functions and applications automatically. This enables the integration of the latest in-car navigation or infotainment services, providing high-performance and interactive in-vehicle experiences in real-time. These services enhance the driving and in-car entertainment experience, offering features like voice-activated temperature control, music selection, and remote functionalities such as preheating and cooling.

Cost-Effective Vehicle Development Through AWS

Running its connected vehicle platform on AWS allows BYD to deliver automated updates globally, improving vehicle safety, operational efficiency, and the overall driving experience. For instance, drivers can use the BYD app to monitor their vehicle’s status, remotely control locks and windows, and locate their car in a parking lot.

To safeguard driver data, BYD utilizes these capabilities for security, identity management, and regulatory compliance. A comprehensive set of AWS security services ensures seven-layer protection against common vulnerabilities and cyberattacks.

Moreover, BYD is leveraging Amazon’s services to enhance in-vehicle audio experiences. Connected vehicles in Europe now come equipped with Amazon Music, allowing drivers to control their music library or playlists through voice commands. This feature is standard on new models, including the BYD SEAL launched at IAA MOBILITY 2023, and will be available in additional European models through over-the-air updates.

Brian Luo, Assistant General Manager of BYD Branding and PR Division, expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “AWS is providing the innovation and security that will help us deliver connected vehicles around the world with the safety, comfort, and convenience that continue to delight our customers.”

Wendy Bauer, Vice President and General Manager of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS, noted, “This proven technology is helping BYD expand its global business, bringing electric vehicles to new parts of the world.”

As BYD expands globally, AWS remains committed to supporting the automaker’s quest for an industry-leading connected car platform and creating unique experiences for drivers, contributing to the realization of future mobility visions.
